Puzzle Rush (5 min) Rating

Puzzle Rush scores table was published by GM Gregory Serper on Chess.com in Dec 10, 2018.

It’s important to mention that Puzzle Rush Survival mode did not exist in 2018—it was introduced on August 20, 2019. At that time, Chess.com released it alongside a 3‑minute timed variant, expanding beyond the classic timed modes.

The scores table is only about the PUZZLE RUSH (5 MIN). Since, I repeat, the Puzzle Rush Survival and Puzzle Rush (3 min) didn’t existed at the time the below score rating table was created in December 10, 2018.

The rules are very simple: you need to solve as many puzzles as you can in just five minutes. But remember, three strikes (wrong solutions) and you are out! Puzzle Rush is a good test of your tactical vision and a nice opportunity to compare your skills against best players in the world.

This chess.com article has a table on Puzzle Rush scores and expected playing strength. Thoughts?

Full article is here, but table is below:

Puzzle Rush (5 min) scores table

  • 9 or fewer correct answers: You’ve probably started playing chess quite recently.
  • 10-19: You are an experienced club player.
  • 20-29: You are a strong tournament player.
  • 30-39: You are at least a master.
  • 40-49: You are a grandmaster (or will be one soon!)
  • 50-54: If FIDE ever organizes a world bullet championship, you should definitely play. You will be in the top 20 for sure!
  • 55 or more: Hi, Hikaru! Thanks for reading this article.

The above table makes sense for Puzzle Rush (5 min). The naysayers didn’t red well and thought it was a Puzzle Rush Survival (no time limit) scores!?

I’m a chess noob who did 14 on his first try. BUT, I’m a puzzle grinder (2700 chess.com puzzles) since I do really enjoy doing them and they are really helpful for my games. Nonetheless, with an noob 300 chess.com rapid rating. I have plenty to learn. Only started playing chess 24 days ago at the noble age of 49, almost 50. And I haven’t played many games yet since I prefer longer games (15/10) and I want to studying and training instead of playing andalways doing the same stupid mistakes.

The Puzzle Rush (5 min) record: 93 (3.23 seconds per puzzle) is currently held by GM Matthias Bluebaum (Msb2).

Now let’s see the difference with the no-time-limit Puzzle Rush Survival.

A whole different story as you’ll see.
